Name: Yuri Plisetsky
Canon: Yuri!!! on Ice
Canon Point: End of ep. 12
Age: 15
History: Fandom Wiki
Personality:
On the ice, Yuri Plisetsky is the embodiment of grace and poise, an almost otherworldly creature of grace and beauty.
Off the ice, he has all the grace of a wet feral cat and the personality to match.
Some of it can be written off to being fifteen years old and a compact ball of raging hormones, but that doesn't necessarily excuse the rude, surly way he addresses most of the world. Yuri is loud and confrontational, not at all hesitant to communicate his frustrations through violence. If he has something to say, he'll get right in your face to say it and if he feels it's necessary, he'll kick you as punctuation. If you look at his upbringing, it's clear he wasn't raised to be this way. His grandfather and coaches tend to be stern, uncompromising people, none of whom seem like they'd be particularly thrilled with the way he sasses his competitors, sits with his feet on chairs, and general acts like an asshole to the world at large. In fact, he's generally on his best behavior when dealing with people who are in positions of authority over him. Sometimes he'll slip, but for the most part, he can turn the volume down and the respect up when necessary. And considering how rigorous his training as a skater is, it would make sense that everything else he keeps inside himself explodes outwards once he has some unsupervised free time. Outside the rigors of the rink environment, he really does seem to let loose and explode. He's been raised to be independent and self-sufficient and when he's unsupervised, this tends to manifest in impulsively doing exactly what he wants. Viktor left? Run off to find him. How? Yell his name until he shows up? See an awesome shirt on the way? Buy it and then yell his name some more.
The kid has a lot of growing up to do.
Yuri really does seem to be harboring a great deal of emotion and drive in that skinny little body of his. He's extremely determined and goal-oriented when it comes to his athletic career. He pushes his body to the limits with every performance and is willing to draw on every resource he can to shape himself into the best skater he can be. Even though he has family, friends, coaches and support staff to help him along the journey, he very much sees it as his work to do. In an interview, the series writer said that Yuri is the sort of person who works hard and shoulders everything alone and also a “worrier” who would have led the story in a tragic direction if he were the main character. You can definitely see this in his dwelling on how his first season in the senior division possibly being his last because he knows his last growth spurt could destroy his flexibility and balance. He pushes himself as hard as he does to win gold because he knows it might be his only chance. These worries and insecurities, however, are things he holds in. He's too proud to let anyone know that he's anything but perfect.
Because Yuri holds so much in, he has to cover it up with something. That's where that rotten attitude of his rears its ugly head again. It's as much his armor as it is an outlet. It's much easier to let everything out as negativity than to be honest and risk anyone finding his vulnerabilities. Or at least that's his intention. For all that he tries to cover his softer side with violence and yelling and badass leopard print, he's not as successful as he thinks he is. He tends to underestimate how easy he is to read, especially for people who are older and more emotionally mature. He thinks he's pretty cool, honestly, and that he's pulling off the whole badass thing, that he's a big mean tiger when most people are actually seeing pretty cute house cat. Much to his consternation, his fanclub seems to have picked up on the whole harmless kitty cat thing and subjects him to it at every opportunity and he suffers through it, believe it or not. Well, if he can't escape it. He's good to his fans, but when they can track him down by smell, you can't really blame him for trying to run away to spare himself at times.
There are definitely times when Yuri's softer side comes out. He's enthusiastically affectionate with his grandfather without a shred of his usual pretense, almost to the point of seeming like a different person. He opens up around Otabek as well, which is very interesting, considering Otabek is a competitor and thus someone he should be trying to prove himself around. However, one thing that Otabek and Yuri's grandfather have in common is that they're straightforward about things (maybe not talkative, but sometimes actions speak louder than words) and Yuri responds well to that. When he's with someone who's being honest with him and with themselves, it puts him at ease and lets the real Yuri come out a little. Not that that's the only type of person Yuri likes. He's the sort of person who becomes deeply attached to others, even if his pride doesn't always allow him to show that in the conventional sort of way. Basically, if he cooks for you or brings you food, you know he likes you. Up until then, it can be really hard to tell.
Yuri might not want other people to know what he's feeling, but he's better than you might think about figuring out what other people are feeling. Maybe it's because of his own tendency to put up walls that he can be very perceptive about what's going on behind other people's. For example, he seems to be able to read Viktor very well, cutting through his former rinkmate's usual cheery exterior to know what's actually going on inside his head. This is evident when Viktor hugs him at the GPF after he's announced his plans to return to skating and Yuuri's plans to retire and Yuri manages to put that all together to realize it's really a cry for help and that what he's being expected to do is, honestly, exactly what he wants to do in the first place: demolish Yuuri's chances at gold by blowing his score out of the water so that he can't have the satisfaction of going out at the top of the podium. For all his bluster, he really is empathetic at his core. He may not even want to admit it to himself, but he wants the people around him to be happy and he'll shoulder a lot on his own to make that happen.
Abilities: Essentially, every ability Yuri has acquired is something he needed for figure skating. He's an exceptionally skilled skater with a strong background in ballet and a...weak background in social skills. He's very driven and self-motivated and generally has enough common sense to take care of himself (most of the time), but aside from his skill on the ice, none of his abilities are really all that exceptional.
Strengths: Perseverance, independence, empathy, perceptiveness, determination
Weaknesses: Pride, tendency to worry, lack of social graces, immaturity, aggression
God/Shinki: God
Why?: Surprisingly, the reason I think he'd do best as a god has nothing to do with his attitude or larger than life personality. Gods are sensitive to the emotional state of their shinki, but not vice versa, and I think this fits well with Yuri's place in canon. Yuri, even though he has his own inimitable way of showing it, is very perceptive when it comes to what the people around him are feeling and reads situations with greater ease than quite a few adult characters in the show and takes it upon himself to do something about it more often than not. This is something I definitely want to explore with him as a god trying to support shinki and answer the prayers of followers. He's had to have such a drive to advance himself and his own position since he was very young, so I want to see how he can grow and mature when he's placed in a position where he has to take on the needs of others.
Top 3 Choices: Bastet, Apollo, Xochipilli
God Type: Yuri doesn't half-ass things. Once he understands what's expected of him, he'll push himself to take on as much as he can. What prayers he answers will be subject to his whims, of course, and he'll definitely choose things that he thinks are worthwhile and prioritize those, but it will bother him if he can't get everything done, so he may exhaust himself trying to take on the little things after the big things are done. (Prayers involving cats and grandparents are High Priority Issues.) While he'll want to know how previous incarnations have handled things, it will mostly be so he can handle them better. He's not interested in blending in and just being the next incarnation in line, he wants to increase his influence and really put himself on the map.
Power:
If Bastet - Feline Manipulation
Yuri will be able to communicate with cats of his choosing, use them for scrying, and utilize mind control to make them do his bidding. He can communicate with any cat, though he can only get out of them what a cat of normal intelligence level would be able to communicate. He can only see through the eyes of one cat at a time. He can control multiple cats at a time, though the more he tries to use, the less control over them he has. (Herding cats, man.)
If not - Jactitation
Yuri will be able to absorb kinetic energy directed towards him and use it to maintain his freedom of movement. This can keep him moving even when his body should normally give out if he has absorbed energy to power himself.
